What Types of Extractions Are Offered?

We offer both basic extractions and surgical extractions for wisdom teeth so that you can get the care you need to relieve your pain and discomfort. Basic extractions are used to remove teeth which are damaged or decayed, but are not impacted (not fully erupted from the socket). Dr. Kella will simply use special tools to loosen the tooth in its socket, then extract it. This process takes only about 5 minutes per tooth.

A surgical extraction may be needed if your wisdom tooth is impacted and has not fully emerged. An incision will be made in the gum line, and then the tooth will be removed through this incision.

What Are the Signs that I Need a Tooth Extraction?

You may need one or more of your teeth to be extracted if you’re suffering from severe tooth decay that can’t be treated with a root canal. Signs of this include a prolonged toothache, discoloration of the tooth and surrounding gum tissue, and sensitivity to heat, cold, and pressure.

A tooth extraction may also be required if your tooth has been damaged by gum disease and is loose. In some cases, extractions may also be used for orthodontic purposes, or to prepare for a procedure like a dental implant.

If your wisdom teeth are emerging and are causing you serious pain and discomfort, they may need to be extracted. Look for symptoms like redness around your wisdom teeth, swelling, pain, inflammation, pus coming from the gums, jaw soreness, or bad breath. These all indicate that you may need a wisdom tooth extraction. It’s best to have your wisdom teeth extracted before the age of 30. As you age, they will become more securely attached and bonded to your jaw, making the process of removing your wisdom teeth more difficult.

What Can I Expect From the Extraction Process?

  • First, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed. During a basic extraction, Dr. Kella will use specialized dental tools to loosen your tooth, then extract it.
  • A surgical extraction will require Dr. Kella to make an incision in the gum through which he will remove your tooth. Once the extraction is complete, the area will be cleaned and sutured shut.
  • You’ll be given comprehensive recovery instructions after your appointment. Usually, you will feel some pain and discomfort for the first 1-3 days after your procedure. Most of this will go away after about a week. After two weeks, your mouth will feel completely healed.

What’s The Best Time To Get Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

  • The best time to get your wisdom teeth extracted is as soon as you notice that they are causing problems in your mouth, or whenever Dr. Kella recommends extraction during your six-month oral exam and teeth cleaning.
  • The sooner you have your wisdom teeth removed, the more likely it is that you can prevent further pain and discomfort. In addition, the jaw bone around your wisdom teeth tends to harden and become tougher as you age, and it will take longer for you to heal after extraction. So if you choose to wait until the age of 30, for example, the process will be more complex and involved compared to having your wisdom teeth removed at the age of 20.
  • If you have noticed issues like pain in the rear of your mouth, swelling and inflammation of the gums near your rear teeth, and swelling or stiffness of your jaw, schedule a consultation with Dr. Kella at Lakeshore Dental Studio right away.

What Is The Healing Process After A Tooth Extraction?

  • It will take about 1-2 weeks to fully heal from your tooth extraction. You will need to follow instructions from Dr. Kella and avoid things like using a straw or spitting forcefully for a few days, as well as minimizing exertion and exercise for 2-3 days.
  • You also must eat a diet of mostly soft foods, and take care to clean your mouth and your extraction site properly. Make sure to follow all of the instructions Dr. Kella provides you with to speed up your recovery process.

"I've seen Dr. Kella a few times to get a crown and have some cavities filled. After my first visit, he and his staff were up front about the work I would need done and how much it would cost. There were no financial surprises. He and his staff are friendly and professional. My appointments always start on time. The quality of the dental work has been excellent as well. I also feel the office is managing COVID concerns and precautions well. They have it coordinated so that I'm not running into other patients in the waiting room or hallway. They take my temperature, provide hand sanitizer, and do a pre-appt questionnaire. I would absolutely recommend this office!"
