This depends on the age of your child. If your child is between 1-2 years old and does not yet have most of their teeth, they will get a “lap exam.” You can hold them on your lap, and Dr. Kella will clean their gums and all of their erupted teeth, and discuss their dental health and development with you.
Children who are 2-3 or older and have most or all of their teeth will get a standard oral exam and teeth cleaning, just like an adult would.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), it’s best to take your child to the dentist for their first appointment when they turn 1 year old, or when their first tooth emerges.
Do you have an older child? Haven’t seen Dr. Kella for an appointment at Lakeshore Dental Studio yet? The best time to start is today. Get in touch to schedule a consultation now.
During your child’s appointment, a hygienist will clean away plaque and tartar with a scraper, brush and polish your child’s teeth, and floss to remove any remaining food debris and plaque. Then, Dr. Kella will examine their mouth to ensure they are free of issues like tooth decay and gum disease.
These six-month dental visits allow us to remove plaque and tartar that is not removable with regular brushing and flossing, and also ensure Dr. Kella can track your child’s oral development and health. In the long run, preventive care like oral exams and teeth cleanings can save you a lot of time and money by preventing oral health problems like cavities and gum disease.
We will only recommend that your child get x-rays if Dr. Kella believes that it is necessary to identify an issue with their smile, and you approve. We use digital x-rays, and use the latest technology to minimize your child’s exposure to radiation from x-rays, ensuring their safety.
A pulpotomy is also called a “baby root canal.” This treatment is usually only required when your child has a very deep cavity in a baby tooth that causes a tooth infection.
Dr. Kella will create a small opening in your child’s tooth, remove the infected material from inside of it, and then use a special dressing to encourage the pulp inside their tooth to heal. This restores your child’s tooth, and ensures it will remain healthy until it falls out naturally and is replaced by a permanent tooth.
