Single-tooth dental implants are the best way to restore your mouth if you’re missing one or several teeth. Each implant consists of two basic parts.
The implant itself is a piece of titanium that’s shaped like a screw. This implant is surgically placed into the gum and jaw tissue where your missing tooth used to be. Over time, it heals and permanently bonds with the jaw bone, becoming a natural part of your mouth.
The second part of a single-tooth implant is a dental crown. This is a false tooth that’s made out of porcelain, and is designed to screw onto your implant using a special attachment called an “abutment.” The implant functions as a tooth root and the crown functions as an artificial tooth, providing you with a dental restoration that looks and feels completely natural.
It takes several appointments over a period of 3-6 months to have your single-tooth implant placed. After Dr. Kapil Kella has conducted a comprehensive oral exam and confirmed that you’re a good candidate, he will schedule your implant surgery.
At this appointment, Dr. Kella will numb your mouth, and place your implant into the proper position, based on your implant placement plan. Then, the area will be cleaned and sutured shut, and you’ll be sent home to heal and recover.
Over the next few months, you’ll come in for multiple follow-up visits. Dr. Kella will ensure that your mouth is healing properly. He will also take dental impressions and images of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental lab where your dental crown will be made.
Once your mouth has healed and your implant has bonded to your jaw bone, an abutment will be attached, and your dental crown will be secured to this abutment. This completes the procedure.
It takes about 1-2 weeks to heal from the initial implant process. Dr. Kapil Kella will give you a set of instructions to use to ensure a speedy recovery.
However, it takes much longer for your implant to bond with your jaw bone. This process, called “osseointegration,” usually takes at least 3-6 months. Once your implant has fully bonded with your jaw and is strong and stable, your single-tooth implant can be completed with a dental crown.
