Little Mouths are a Big Deal

There are many misconceptions about children brushing their own teeth, but the truth is that is varies for everybody. It’s important to remember that just because they are able to brush their teeth doesn’t mean they’re doing a good enough job. Generally speaking, younger children don’t have the manual dexterity to properly brush their own teeth. A good rule of thumb is that if they can’t tie their own shoelaces, they likely can’t reach some spaces where plaque grows. However, practice makes perfect! Research shows that there’s a stronger correlation between learning effective brushing technique rather than simply getting older (National Taiwan University). Dr. Kella recommends monitoring their brushing until they’ve got the hang of it, generally from the age of 6-7, and to keep encouraging your children to make healthy oral hygiene a habit!
